Using only the constructed pilot notes, write a proposed revision memo: name the limiting measurement, calculate the predicted timing improvement, specify what the next supervised run must record, and state which conclusions cannot yet be claimed. This written task must not be marked as completed apparatus experience. Constructed illustrative data (not observed experimental evidence). Raw pilot notes: five complete cycles took 3.3 s with about 0.2 s uncertainty for the timed interval; some runs became elliptical; the unloaded spring length increased after the heaviest load. Evaluate a proposed timing interval of 20 complete cycles, expected to take about 13.2 s if the period is unchanged.

Answer overviewTiming interval limits precision; predicted6.1% to 1.5% timing contribution; record actual repeats, amplitude/damping, uncertainties, deviations and assistance in an approved run. No claim of observed improvement or independent practical competence is yet justified.

(a)

3 marks

Quantify the proposed revision.

How to approach it

Identify what the question is testing, organise the response into distinct mark-earning points, and make every conclusion traceable to a physical principle or to the evidence supplied.

  1. 1

About6.1% to 1.5% timing uncertainty using20 cycles if damping/counting remain suitable.

02

(b)

2 marks

Specify required new evidence.

How to approach it

Identify what the question is testing, organise the response into distinct mark-earning points, and make every conclusion traceable to a physical principle or to the evidence supplied.

  1. 1

Actual raw repeated times, uncertainty/controls, deviations and assistance recorded in an approved supervised run.

03

(c)

1 mark

State what is not yet established.

How to approach it

Identify what the question is testing, organise the response into distinct mark-earning points, and make every conclusion traceable to a physical principle or to the evidence supplied.

  1. 1

Neither observed improvement nor practical competence has been demonstrated by the written constructed-data task.

Use these worked steps alongside the part-by-part answers. They explain the method and mark allocation; they do not add extra marks.

  1. Specific limitation and numerical6.1%/1.5% comparison:2 marks.
  2. Workable revised20-cycle procedure with damping/counting control:1 mark.
  3. Concrete original-data and assistance/deviation record for actual supervised execution:2 marks.
  4. Explicitly distinguish proposed improvement from measured outcome and written preparation from apparatus competence:1 mark.
