Noether currents and conservation laws

Conservation laws are not axioms of the Standard Model; they are read off its Lagrangian. Learn to build the current and charge behind each continuous symmetry, then sort the charges: enforced by the gauge group, conserved by accident, quietly broken by the anomaly, or — for CPT — a theorem no one had to assume.

Build the model

Every conserved number is a symmetry the Lagrangian happens to have.

The key idea

A Noether current is the conserved four-vector jμ that every continuous symmetry of the Lagrangian generates; unless an anomaly spoils it, its charge Q = ∫ j⁰ d³x is a Hermitian operator commuting with H, so its eigenvalue labels states and cannot change in any reaction.

Example. For the electron field, ψ → e(iα)ψ gives jμ = ψ̄γμψ and Q = Nₑ − Nₑ⁺: a plasma of 10²⁰ electrons and 3 × 10¹⁹ positrons has Q = 7 × 10¹⁹ and electric charge −7 × 10¹⁹ e = −11.2 C, whatever collisions occur inside it.

The complete physical model and assumptions

Noether's theorem is a machine: feed it a continuous transformation that leaves the Lagrangian density invariant and it returns a four-vector jμ with ∂μ jμ = 0, whose time component integrates to a charge Q that commutes with H. Run on the Standard Model it sorts conservation laws into classes that look identical in a ledger and are nothing alike underneath. Gauge symmetries give electric and colour charge — exact because U(1)EM stays unbroken, and because confinement lets only colour singlets reach a detector. Baryon and lepton number were never imposed: they are accidental, because the field content, gauge invariance and renormalisability leave no dimension-4 operator that could break them, and that alone is why a proton outlives 10³⁴ years. The cost shows twice. At the quantum level the B and L currents are anomalous, so only B − L is exact and B + L changes by six units per sphaleron transition — unobservably at zero temperature, freely in the early universe. And the model is effective: dimension-5 and dimension-6 operators suppressed by a scale Λ break L and B, and the neutrino masses that oscillation demands are the first sign one of them is real. Discrete symmetries are separate business — P, C and T have no generator and no current, and the model breaks each — while CPT holds not as an input but as a theorem of any local, Lorentz-invariant field theory.

1Run the theorem once, on the Dirac field

Take ℒ = ψ̄(iγμ∂μ − m)ψ and the global phase ψ → e(iα)ψ, so δψ = iψ per unit α and δψ̄ = −iψ̄. The only derivative in ℒ acts on ψ, with ∂ℒ/∂(∂μψ) = iψ̄γμ, so the Noether current is (iψ̄γμ)(iψ) = −ψ̄γμψ; the overall sign is conventional and one writes jμ = ψ̄γμψ. Its divergence is (∂μψ̄)γμψ + ψ̄γμ∂μψ, and the Dirac equation with its adjoint supply γμ∂μψ = −imψ and ∂μψ̄γμ = +imψ̄, so the two terms cancel: ∂μ jμ = 0, but only on-shell. The time component j⁰ = ψ†ψ integrates to Q = ∫ψ†ψ d³x, and once ψ is expanded in creation and annihilation operators, Q = Σ(b†b − d†d) = N − N̄, particles minus antiparticles. Nothing used the mass: the current is conserved at m = 0 too, and the same construction on each of the fifteen Weyl fields per generation is where every additive quantum number in the Standard Model comes from.

2Gauged charges: electric charge and colour

Two of those currents couple to gauge fields, and that changes their status. Electric charge is the generator Q = T₃ + Y/2 that the Higgs vacuum leaves unbroken, so its current couples to a massless photon and dQ/dt = 0 is protected by gauge invariance itself: a photon mass and a decaying electron would both break U(1)EM, and the limit on e⁻ → νγ exceeds 6 × 10²⁸ yr. Colour is subtler. The quark current Jμa = ψ̄γμTaψ obeys only DμJμa = 0, because gluons carry colour and exchange it with quarks; the genuinely conserved Noether current adds the gluon field's own term, fabc Abν Fcνμ. In practice colour never enters a ledger at all: confinement makes every asymptotic state a colour singlet with Qa = 0 on both sides, so the law is satisfied identically rather than checked. Spontaneous breaking does not repeal Noether either — the currents of the three broken electroweak generators are still conserved, but their charges fail to annihilate the vacuum, so they label no states. Energy, momentum and angular momentum come from the Poincaré generators: exact, never accidental.

3Accidental symmetries: B and L nobody imposed

List every gauge-invariant, renormalisable operator you can build from the Standard Model fields — dimension four at most — and something falls out unasked. Each term has equal numbers of quark and antiquark fields, and of lepton and antilepton fields, so the Lagrangian is invariant under the global phases q → e(iα/3)q and ℓ → e(iβ)ℓ that nobody wrote down. Noether then hands over B = ⅓∫Σq q†q d³x and L = ∫Σ_ℓ ℓ†ℓ d³x, plus separate Lₑ, Lμ and Lτ, since with no right-handed neutrino nothing can rotate one lepton doublet into another. These are accidental symmetries: consequences of the field content and of renormalisability, not principles. The ⅓ in B is a bookkeeping choice that makes the proton carry B = 1; the physics is the phase. Proton stability to 10³⁴ yr is therefore enforced by no gauge field — it is the statement that the operators which could end it happen to have dimension six, suppressed by two powers of whatever scale lies beyond.

4The anomaly: only B − L survives quantisation

Noether's proof is classical. In the quantum theory the fermion measure is not invariant under a chiral rotation, and the B and L currents — which SU(2)L sees only through left-handed doublets — pick up the same anomaly: ∂μ jμB = ∂μ jμL = (Ng/32π²)(g² W⋅W̃ − g′² B⋅B̃). Two consequences are immediate. Subtract, and B − L is exactly conserved, an accidental symmetry that survives quantisation. Add, and B + L changes whenever the gauge field's Chern–Simons number does: each unit of ΔNCS shifts B and L by Ng = 3, one per generation, through a twelve-fermion vertex such as uud ccs ttb → e⁺μ⁺τ⁺. At zero temperature that needs tunnelling between gauge vacua, suppressed by exp(−4π/αW) ≈ 4 × 10⁻¹⁶², with αW = α/sin²θW from α = 1/128 and sin²θW = 0.231, so no laboratory will see it. Above the electroweak temperature of about 100 GeV the barrier is crossed thermally by sphaleron transitions with no such factor, and B + L is simply not conserved in the early universe — which is why baryogenesis is a question the model must answer rather than a bookkeeping triviality.

5P, C and T have no generator; CPT needs no assumption

Parity, charge conjugation and time reversal are not continuous: there is no one-parameter family U(α) = exp(−iαG), no generator, no current, nothing to integrate. P and C act as multiplicative labels, ±1 on their eigenstates; T is antiunitary, so it supplies no eigenvalue label at all, only a relation between a process and its time-reversed partner. Each is a separate empirical question. The Standard Model answers all three the same way. The projector PL = (1 − γ₅)/2 in every charged-current vertex breaks P and C maximally; the CKM phase δ breaks CP in the quark sector at the level of the Jarlskog invariant J ≈ 3 × 10⁻⁵; and T is broken by exactly as much as CP, because CPT was never the model's to choose. The Lüders–Pauli–Jost theorem says any Lorentz-invariant, local field theory with a Hermitian Hamiltonian and the usual spin–statistics connection is CPT-symmetric, so every particle and its antiparticle share mass and lifetime; the neutral kaons test that at |mK⁰ − mK̄⁰|/mK < 6 × 10⁻¹⁹. A CPT violation would not be a new parameter in the model. It would be the end of the framework.

6The ledger, and what stands outside it

Rank the model's conserved quantities by what protects them. Exact from spacetime symmetry: energy, momentum, angular momentum. Exact from an unbroken gauge symmetry: electric charge and colour. Exact by accident and surviving the anomaly: B − L. Accidental but anomalous: B, L and B + L, safe at zero temperature, violated at 100 GeV. Accidental and already dead: Lₑ, Lμ and Lτ, because neutrino oscillation rotates one family into another, and the model as written — no νR, no dimension-5 operator — cannot even describe it. Two things stand outside. Neutrino mass needs either a Dirac partner νR, which keeps total L, or the Weinberg operator (LH)²/Λ, which breaks it by two units and makes neutrinoless double beta decay the deciding experiment. And gravity: it has no generator here, and a black hole that swallows a baryon and evaporates remembers its electric charge but not its baryon number — the expectation that quantum gravity respects gauge charges and no global ones is the deepest reason to call B and L accidental.

Key equations

Read the units, assumptions and limits before substituting.

Noether current

jμ = (∂ℒ/∂(∂μφ)) δφ − Kμ, ∂μ jμ = 0 on-shell

The whole theorem in one line: a continuous symmetry hands you a four-vector whose divergence vanishes once the field equations hold.

ℒ the Lagrangian density (GeV⁴ in ħ = c = 1); δφ the change per unit parameter; Kμ the total derivative ℒ shifts by

Charge and generator

Q = ∫ j⁰ d³x, dQ/dt = −∮ j⋅dA = 0, [H, Q] = 0, U(α) = exp(−iαQ)

Turns a local continuity equation into a global count; because Q commutes with H it shares an eigenbasis, and its eigenvalue labels every state.

j⁰ a number density (m⁻³), Q dimensionless; the surface integral dies for fields that vanish at infinity

Dirac U(1) current

ψ → e(iα)ψ ⇒ jμ = ψ̄γμψ, Q = ∫ ψ†ψ d³x = N − N̄

N − N̄, particle minus antiparticle, is what the conserved number counts — pair creation raises N and N̄ together and leaves Q untouched.

ψ a four-component Dirac spinor, γμ the 4 × 4 Dirac matrices; the species' electric charge is q⋅Q

Non-abelian colour current

Jμa = ψ̄γμTaψ, DμJμa = ∂μJμa + gₛ fabc Abμ Jμc = 0

The quark current alone is only covariantly conserved: gluons carry colour, and only the total current including the gauge field's own term obeys ∂μ jμ = 0.

Ta = λa/2 the eight SU(3) generators, fabc its structure constants, Abμ the gluon fields, gₛ the strong coupling

The B and L anomaly

∂μ jμB = ∂μ jμL = (Ng/32π²)(g² Waμν W̃aμν − g′² Bμν B̃μν)

Identical right-hand sides, so ∂μ(jB − jL)μ = 0 exactly, while B + L changes by 2Ng = 6 per unit of Chern–Simons number.

Ng = 3 generations; W̃μν = ½εμνρσ Wρσ; g, g′ the SU(2)L and U(1)Y couplings; overall sign is convention

Where accidental stops meaning exact

ℒ ⊃ c₅(LH)(LH)/Λ + c₆ QQQL/Λ² ⇒ mν = c₅v²/2Λ, τₚ ≈ ħΛ⁴/c₆²mₚ⁵

Nothing forbids these once the model is effective: Λ ≈ 6 × 10¹⁴ GeV gives mν = 50 meV, while τₚ > 10³⁴ yr needs Λ above 2 × 10¹⁶ GeV.

v = 246 GeV; ΔL = 2 at dimension 5, ΔB = ΔL = 1 at dimension 6; Λ in GeV; the τₚ form is a dimensional estimate

Catch the common trap

Students treat baryon number the way they treat electric charge: a law of nature, exact because Noether said so. It is neither. No gauge field couples to B — if one did, a composition-dependent long-range force between nuclei would appear in Eötvös-type tests, and none does — so B is a global phase symmetry of the renormalisable Lagrangian that no principle demanded. And Noether's theorem is classical: the quantum measure is not invariant under the same rotation, the B current picks up the SU(2)L anomaly, and B changes by three units per sphaleron transition. What is exact is B − L, and even that only within a model that has no νR and stops at dimension four. The proton's 10³⁴-year stability is a consequence of dimension counting, not of a conservation law with a generator behind it; the honest ledger entry for B is "conserved by every process we can produce" — a different claim.
