Baryon number: an accidental symmetry
The proton has never been seen to decay, and the Standard Model never promised that it would not. Build B̂ from number operators, show by counting fields why every allowed term commutes with it, then price the accident: which operator breaks it first, how the rate scales with Λ, and what 10³⁴ years of silence measures.

Build the model
Conserved because nothing renormalisable can break it, not because anything enforces it.
The key idea
Baryon number is the eigenvalue of B̂ = (N̂q − N̂q̄)/3 — +1 for a baryon, −1 for an antibaryon, 0 for mesons, leptons and the gauge and Higgs bosons; it adds across a state and every renormalisable term of the Standard Model conserves it, though no gauge field enforces it.
Example. In p + p → p + p + p + p̄ the ledger reads 1 + 1 = 1 + 1 + 1 − 1, so B is 2 on both sides and the reaction is allowed — at a fixed-target kinetic energy of 6 mₚ c² = 5.63 GeV, the energy the Bevatron was built for when it found the antiproton in 1955.
The complete physical model and assumptions
Electric charge is conserved because the Standard Model was built to conserve it: the phase of every charged field is gauged, a massless photon enforces the current, and Gauss's law lets you read Q off a surface at infinity. Baryon number has none of that machinery. B̂ = (N̂q − N̂q̄)/3 is a perfectly good Hermitian operator and U(α) = exp(−iαB̂) is a symmetry of the Lagrangian, but nobody imposed it. It survives because, with quarks in colour triplets and every operator capped at mass dimension four, the only colour-singlet fermion bilinear you can write is q̄q, which creates and destroys quarks in pairs — so every term of H commutes with B̂ by counting alone. That is what accidental means, and it sets the price. The first gauge-invariant operator that does change B, ε(qq)(qℓ), has dimension six and coefficient 1/Λ², so any new physics at a scale Λ makes the proton decay at a rate scaling as mₚ⁵/Λ⁴; the electroweak anomaly already breaks B + L through sphalerons while leaving B − L exact; and the matter–antimatter asymmetry of the universe proves B was violated somewhere. The 2.4 × 10³⁴-year silence of Super-Kamiokande is therefore not the confirmation of a law but a lower bound on the scale that breaks it: a unification boson with αX = 1/40 must be heavier than about 5 × 10¹⁵ GeV for the accident to hold.
1Build B̂ from number operators and let it add
In second quantisation every quark flavour f and colour c carries a number operator N̂q = Σ b†b and an antiquark counterpart N̂q̄ = Σ d†d. Define B̂ = (1/3) Σ_{f, c} (N̂q − N̂q̄), equivalently (1/3) Σf ∫ d³x :qf† qf:, the normal ordering being what makes an antiquark count −1/3. B̂ is Hermitian, its eigenvalue is an integer on every colour-singlet state, and on a product state |ψ₁⟩⊗|ψ₂⟩ it acts as B̂⊗1 + 1⊗B̂, so eigenvalues add — that is what makes a ledger legitimate. Read the entries off the quark content: p, n, Λ, Σ, Ω⁻ and every qqq state carry +1, their antiparticles −1, a meson qq̄ carries 1/3 − 1/3 = 0, leptons, photons, W, Z, gluons and the Higgs carry 0, and a nucleus carries its mass number A. Then p + p → p + p + p + p̄ reads 2 → 1 + 1 + 1 − 1 = 2 and is allowed; the invariant s = 2mₚ² + 2E mₚ must reach (4mₚ)², so E = 7mₚ and the beam needs kinetic energy 6mₚ c² = 5.63 GeV. That number is why the Bevatron was built to 6.2 GeV.
2Find the generator, and notice that nobody gauged it
A conserved additive number is the generator of a continuous symmetry, so ask which. U(α) = exp(−iαB̂) rotates every quark field by q → e(−iα/3) q and leaves leptons and bosons alone; α is one constant for all of spacetime, so this is a global U(1), and Noether's theorem gives the current jBμ = (1/3) Σf q̄f γμ qf with B̂ = ∫ jB⁰ d³x. Conservation reduces to [H, B̂] = 0, and here the commutator can be checked by counting fields: every term of the Standard Model Hamiltonian — gauge couplings q̄γμDμq, Yukawas q̄φq, and the pure-boson terms — contains quark and antiquark fields in pairs, so each term changes N̂q − N̂q̄ by zero. Compare electric charge. Its phase is local, α(x), and making the Lagrangian tolerate that forces the photon into existence. A massless vector coupled to B would exist the same way, and would pull on iron and aluminium by different amounts per unit mass, because their baryon-to-mass ratios differ. Eötvös-type balances see no such force, so B is not gauged: it is a symmetry the theory happens to have, not one it was built on.
3Why the accident happens: three lines of colour counting
B is conserved only because no allowed operator can break it, and allowed has three parts: Lorentz invariant, invariant under SU(3)c × SU(2)L × U(1)Y, and mass dimension at most four. A quark field has dimension 3/2. A colour singlet from a quark and an antiquark uses 3 ⊗ 3̄ ∋ 1, but that is q̄q with B = 0. Two quarks give 3 ⊗ 3 = 6 ⊕ 3̄, no singlet at all. Three quarks give 3 ⊗ 3 ⊗ 3 ∋ 1 through εabc, with B = 1 — but that object has dimension 9/2 and is a fermion, so it cannot stand alone; it needs a fourth fermion, a lepton, to make a Lorentz scalar, and then the dimension is 6. Renormalisability throws it out. So B conservation is a theorem about the field content, and it evaporates the moment dimension six is admitted. The operator that survives every other check is O₆ = εabc (uRa dRb)(uRc eR)/Λ²: hypercharges 4/3 − 2/3 + 4/3 − 2 = 0, colour singlet, Lorentz scalar, and coefficient 1/Λ² because the total must come out at dimension four. Acting on a proton it removes three quarks and creates a positron: ΔB = ΔL = −1.
4Price the accident: the dimension-six rate and the Λ⁴ wall
Once a 1/Λ² operator exists, dimensional analysis prices it. If a heavy boson of mass MX and coupling g mediates the four-fermion contact, the amplitude for p → e⁺π⁰ carries g²/MX², the rate carries αX²/MX⁴, and the only other scale in the problem is the proton mass: Γₚ ≈ αX² mₚ⁵/MX⁴ in natural units. Put in MX = 10¹⁶ GeV and αX = 1/40. With mₚ⁵ = 0.727 GeV⁵, Γ = 6.25 × 10⁻⁴ × 0.727/10⁶⁴ = 4.5 × 10⁻⁶⁸ GeV, and τ = ħ/Γ = 6.58 × 10⁻²⁵ GeV s / 4.5 × 10⁻⁶⁸ GeV = 1.4 × 10⁴³ s = 4.6 × 10³⁵ years. The fourth power is the lesson: every factor of 10 in MX moves the lifetime by 10⁴, while the coupling shifts it by one decade across any plausible range. Run it backwards. Super-Kamiokande's τ/BR(p → e⁺π⁰) > 2.4 × 10³⁴ years gives MX⁴ > αX² mₚ⁵ τ/ħ, that is MX > 4.8 × 10¹⁵ GeV. Minimal SU(5) unification put MX near 10¹⁵ GeV and predicted about 10³¹ years; the accident, measured, killed it.
5The anomaly: B − L survives, B + L does not
The classical statement ∂μ jBμ = 0 does not survive quantisation. Because the weak interaction is chiral, the triangle diagram with two W bosons gives ∂μ jBμ = ∂μ jLμ = (ng g²/32π²) Waμν W̃(aμν), with ng = 3 and the same coefficient for B and L because each generation has three colours of quark doublet at 1/3 and one lepton doublet at 1. So jB − jL is exactly conserved and jB + jL is not. The right-hand side is a total derivative whose spacetime integral is an integer, the change in Chern–Simons number, so one transition changes B and L by 3 ΔNCS each: the 't Hooft vertex turns nine quarks into three antileptons, ΔB = ΔL = −3. At zero temperature this is tunnelling through a barrier about 9 TeV high, the sphaleron, and the rate carries e(−4π/αW) ≈ e(−370) ≈ 10⁻¹⁶⁰: unobservable. Above about 130 GeV the plasma hops the barrier freely and B + L is washed out. So the observed asymmetry nB/nγ ≈ 6 × 10⁻¹⁰ is a problem the accident forces on you: Sakharov's first condition is B violation, the model has some, and any primordial B + L is erased while B − L stays.
6Reading a search: ΔB = 1 against ΔB = 2
Two classes of search test the accident, and the ledger tells them apart. p → e⁺π⁰ and p → K⁺ν̄ have ΔB = −1 and ΔL = −1, so Δ(B − L) = 0; they are what dimension six and grand unification predict, and a water Cherenkov detector looks for a back-to-back positron and π⁰ with invariant mass 938 MeV and near-zero net momentum, Fermi motion in oxygen smearing both. Neutron–antineutron oscillation has ΔB = 2 with ΔL = 0, so Δ(B − L) = 2; it needs six quark fields, dimension nine, coefficient 1/Λ⁵, and a mixing δm ≈ ΛQCD⁶/Λ⁵ that makes a free neutron oscillate on the time scale ħ/δm. The ILL free-neutron limit, τₙₙ̄ > 8.6 × 10⁷ s, reaches Λ near 4 × 10⁵ GeV — ten orders below what proton decay reaches, because δm falls as Λ⁻⁵ from a hadronic scale of 0.2 GeV and an oscillation time of 10⁸ s is a far weaker constraint than a lifetime of 10⁴² s. The pairing is the point: an observed ΔB = 1 decay with Δ(B − L) = 0 points at a unification scale; an observed ΔB = 2 points at a few hundred TeV and, like a Majorana neutrino, breaks B − L itself. And a limit is a lower bound on Λ, never a proof of the law.

τₚ ≈ ħ MX⁴ / (αX² mₚ⁵)
MX = 10¹⁶ GeV and αX = 1/40 give 4.6 × 10³⁵ yr; every factor 10 in MX is 10⁴ in τₚ, so the coupling hardly matters.

Catch the common trap
The standard slip is to treat B̂ as a count of quarks. It counts quarks minus antiquarks, and the difference matters because N̂q alone does not commute with H: gluons split into qq̄ pairs constantly, so inside a proton the number of quark-type constituents fluctuates while B̂ sits sharply at 1 — the two extra constituents of a five-quark fluctuation always arrive as a pair contributing 1/3 − 1/3. The same slip makes a meson look like B = 2/3 (it is 0), makes π⁺ → μ⁺νμ look like a violation (a u and a d̄ annihilate, ΔNq = ΔNq̄ = −1, ΔB = 0), and makes accidental sound like approximate. It is not: within renormalisable Standard Model dynamics B̂ commutes with H to every order of perturbation theory, and the only known break is the non-perturbative anomaly, at 10⁻¹⁶⁰ today. Accidental means unprotected — a statement about what new physics may do, not about what the current theory does.

- Assign B particle by particle: each proton +1, the antiproton −1 (three antiquarks at −1/3 each). Left side 1 + 1 = 2; right side 1 + 1 + 1 − 1 = 2. The ledger balances, so B allows it.
- Charge: +2e on the left, +1 + 1 + 1 − 1 = +2e on the right. Lepton numbers are zero throughout. Nothing in the audit forbids the reaction, and it is a strong process, so it will run once energy allows.
- Threshold from the invariant s = (Σp)²: with a beam of total energy E on a target at rest, s = 2mₚ² + 2E mₚ (c = 1). At threshold the four final particles are at rest in the centre-of-mass frame, so √s = 4mₚ and s = 16mₚ².
- Solve 16mₚ² = 2mₚ² + 2E mₚ for E = 7mₚ, so the beam kinetic energy is T = E − mₚ = 6mₚ c² = 6 × 938.3 MeV = 5.63 GeV. The Bevatron was designed to 6.2 GeV precisely to clear this number, and the antiproton was found there in 1955.
Answer. B is 2 → 2 and Q is +2 → +2, so the reaction is allowed; the fixed-target threshold is T = 6 mₚ c² = 5.63 GeV.
MediumExample 2
A grand unified theory mediates p → e⁺π⁰ through a boson of mass MX = 10¹⁶ GeV with αX = 1/40. Estimate the proton lifetime from Γ ≈ αX² mₚ⁵/MX⁴, then use Super-Kamiokande's limit τ/BR > 2.4 × 10³⁴ yr to bound MX. Take ħ = 6.58 × 10⁻²⁵ GeV s and mₚ = 0.9383 GeV.

- The four-fermion operator has coefficient g²/MX², so the rate carries (g²/MX²)² ∝ αX²/MX⁴; the remaining dimension of mass must come from the proton, giving Γ ≈ αX² mₚ⁵/MX⁴ in natural units.
- mₚ⁵ = 0.9383⁵ = 0.727 GeV⁵ and αX² = 1/1600 = 6.25 × 10⁻⁴, so Γ = 6.25 × 10⁻⁴ × 0.727 / 10⁶⁴ = 4.54 × 10⁻⁶⁸ GeV.
- τ = ħ/Γ = 6.58 × 10⁻²⁵ GeV s / 4.54 × 10⁻⁶⁸ GeV = 1.45 × 10⁴³ s. Dividing by 3.156 × 10⁷ s per year gives 4.6 × 10³⁵ yr — safely above the limit, by a factor of about 19.
- Invert the scaling: τ ∝ MX⁴, so the limit becomes MX > 10¹⁶ GeV × (2.4 × 10³⁴ / 4.6 × 10³⁵)¹⁄⁴ = 10¹⁶ × (0.052)¹⁄⁴ = 0.48 × 10¹⁶ GeV.
- Check the sensitivity to the coupling: doubling αX to 1/20 raises Γ by 4 and raises the bound on MX only by a factor 4¹⁄⁴ = 1.41. The scale controls everything; the coupling is a detail.
Answer. τₚ ≈ 4.6 × 10³⁵ yr for MX = 10¹⁶ GeV, and the Super-K limit requires MX > 4.8 × 10¹⁵ GeV.
HardExample 3
Super-Kamiokande watched 450 kt⋅yr of water for p → e⁺π⁰ with detection efficiency 0.39 and saw no candidate. Derive the 90% CL lifetime limit. Then compare a ΔB = 2 search: the ILL free-neutron bound τₙₙ̄ > 8.6 × 10⁷ s, with mixing δm ≈ ΛQCD⁶/Λ⁵ and ΛQCD = 0.2 GeV. Which scale does each probe?
Sketch your answer or reasoning, then compare it with the authored solution. Your writing is not automatically graded or saved.

- Protons in water: 10 per H₂O molecule (8 in oxygen, 2 free), so one kilotonne holds (10⁹ g / 18.0 g mol⁻¹) × 6.02 × 10²³ × 10 = 3.34 × 10³² protons. An exposure of 450 kt⋅yr therefore watches 1.50 × 10³⁵ proton-years.
- Zero candidates: for a Poisson mean μ, P(0) = e(−μ), and P(0) ≥ 0.10 requires μ ≤ 2.3 — the 90% CL upper bound on the expected number. Expected signal = Nₚ T ε BR/τ, so τ/BR > 1.50 × 10³⁵ × 0.39 / 2.3 = 2.5 × 10³⁴ yr. The published 2.4 × 10³⁴ yr also folds in a small expected background and systematic uncertainties through a Bayesian limit.
- ΔB = 2 instead: n → n̄ needs six quark fields, dimension 9, coefficient 1/Λ⁵. The hadronic matrix element supplies the remaining dimensions, so the mass mixing is δm ≈ ΛQCD⁶/Λ⁵ and a free neutron turns into an antineutron with probability sin²(t/τₙₙ̄), where the oscillation time is τₙₙ̄ = ħ/δm.
- Invert: δm < 6.58 × 10⁻²⁵ GeV s / 8.6 × 10⁷ s = 7.7 × 10⁻³³ GeV, so Λ⁵ > ΛQCD⁶/δm = 6.4 × 10⁻⁵ GeV⁶ / 7.7 × 10⁻³³ GeV = 8.4 × 10²⁷ GeV⁵, and Λ > (8.4 × 10²⁷)¹⁄⁵ GeV = 3.8 × 10⁵ GeV.
- Compare with the ΔB = 1 bound, MX > 4.8 × 10¹⁵ GeV: ten orders of magnitude apart, because a lifetime measured in 10⁴² s constrains Λ⁻⁴ far harder than an oscillation time measured in 10⁸ s constrains Λ⁻⁵. Pushing the proton-decay reach to 10³⁶ yr by exposure alone needs 10³⁶ / 2.5 × 10³⁴ = 40 times 450 kt⋅yr — about 18 Mt⋅yr, or some 95 years of a 190 kt detector.
Answer. τ/BR(p → e⁺π⁰) > 2.5 × 10³⁴ yr from 450 kt⋅yr. The ΔB = 2 search reaches Λ ≈ 4 × 10⁵ GeV against MX ≈ 5 × 10¹⁵ GeV for ΔB = 1, and reaching 10³⁶ yr would need about 18 Mt⋅yr.
