Lepton number and family number

Lepton number is the ledger line that says which neutrino comes out of a decay and which decay never happens. Write it as an operator, see why the Standard Model conserves it with nothing enforcing it, and follow the one place it has already failed — the neutrino in flight — to the experiment that decides whether it fails completely.

1

Build the model

A charge the Standard Model conserves by accident — and the neutrino already breaks.

The key idea

Lepton family number Lα (α = e, μ, τ) counts each lepton of that family as +1 and each antilepton as −1, summed over every particle in a state; the Standard Model with massless neutrinos conserves each Lα separately, and therefore total L = Lₑ + Lμ + Lτ as well.

Example. In μ⁻ → e⁻ + ν̄ₑ + νμ the left side has (Lₑ, Lμ) = (0, 1) and the right side (1 − 1 + 0, 0 + 0 + 1) = (0, 1): both ledgers balance, and it is the antineutrino that makes Lₑ balance.

The complete physical model and assumptions

Lepton number is three additive integer charges, not one. Each family — e, μ, τ — has its own operator L̂α that counts its leptons as +1 and its antileptons as −1, and each is the generator of an independent U(1) phase rotation of that family's fields. Because every vertex in the Standard Model couples a lepton to its own family's neutrino or to itself, the Hamiltonian is invariant under all three phases, [H, L̂α] = 0, and the three ledgers balance separately in every reaction the model allows. Nothing enforces this. No gauge boson couples to Lα the way the photon couples to Q; the law survives only because, with massless neutrinos, no renormalisable term could break it — it is accidental. That is the cost. Give the neutrinos masses that mix the families and the flavour states created at a W vertex, the eigenstates of L̂α, are no longer the eigenstates of H, so a 1 GeV νμ leaves the target with Lμ = 1 and arrives 295 km later with ⟨L̂μ⟩ = 0.35. Family number is a law known to fail. For charged leptons the failure is unobservably small, about 10⁻⁵⁴ in the branching ratio of μ → eγ, so the ledger keeps working there. Total L = Lₑ + Lμ + Lτ survives oscillation untouched, and whether it survives at all depends on one unanswered question — whether the neutrino is its own antiparticle — which neutrinoless double β decay, a ΔL = 2 process, is built to settle.

1Assign the charge particle by particle, then sum each family

The rule is additive and integer. Every charged lepton and every neutrino of family α carries Lα = +1, every antilepton of that family −1, and everything else — quarks, hadrons, photons, W, Z, Higgs — carries 0. A state's Lα is the sum over its particles, so the ledger entry for a reaction is one integer per side. Run it for μ⁻ → e⁻ + ν̄ₑ + νμ: Lμ reads 1 → 0 + 0 + 1 and Lₑ reads 0 → 1 + (−1) + 0, both balanced. Now run β⁻ decay with the third particle unknown, n → p + e⁻ + X. Charge and baryon number are already settled by p and e⁻, so Lₑ is the only ledger left: 0 = 0 + 1 + Lₑ(X) forces Lₑ(X) = −1, and X is the antineutrino, not the neutrino. That sign is experimental content. Reines and Cowan detected reactor ν̄ₑ through ν̄ₑ + p → e⁺ + n, which keeps Lₑ at −1 on both sides, while Davis found that the same reactor flux does not drive ν̄ₑ + ³⁷Cl → ³⁷Ar + e⁻, which would need Lₑ to go from −1 to +1.

2The generator behind the ledger, and why nothing enforces it

Multiply every field of family α by one phase, ψ → e(iφ)ψ, and leave the other two families alone. The Standard Model Lagrangian with massless neutrinos is unchanged, so Noether gives a conserved current and a Hermitian charge L̂α = ∫ j⁰α d³x, which in the particle basis is the number-operator combination on the formula card. The unitary family U(φ) = exp(−iφL̂α) is that symmetry acting on states, and the Heisenberg equation d⟨L̂α⟩/dt = (i/ℏ)⟨[H, L̂α]⟩ reduces conservation to one statement, [H, L̂α] = 0. It holds because every interaction term in H is family-diagonal: the W couples e to νₑ, μ to νμ and τ to ντ, never across families, and the Z, photon and Higgs couple each lepton to itself, so each term carries equal and opposite phases and is neutral. Nothing gauges this phase. Electric charge has a photon whose masslessness enforces it; Lα has no boson at all, and survives only because no renormalisable operator built from the massless-neutrino field content can break it. That is what accidental means, and why the law is exposed the moment the field content changes.

3Two eigenbases that disagree: L̂α against H

Give the neutrinos masses and the field content has changed. The states created at a W vertex, |νₑ⟩, |νμ⟩ and |ντ⟩, are eigenstates of L̂α. The states that propagate with definite energy are eigenstates of H, |ν₁⟩, |ν₂⟩ and |ν₃⟩ with masses mᵢ, and the two bases are related by the unitary PMNS matrix, |να⟩ = Σᵢ U*αi |νᵢ⟩. If U is not diagonal the two Hermitian operators share no eigenbasis, so [H, L̂α] ≠ 0 — the same algebra that makes Sz precess under a Hamiltonian proportional to Sₓ. Keep two flavours. In the flavour basis, dropping a multiple of the identity, H = (Δm²c⁴/4E)(−cos 2θ σz + sin 2θ σₓ): a flavour state is a spinor tilted by 2θ from the field, and it precesses. The probability that a νμ has become the other flavour after a distance L is P = sin²2θ sin²(Δm²c⁴L/4ℏcE), which in practical units is sin²2θ sin²(1.267 Δm²[eV²] L[km]/E[GeV]). For Δm² = 2.5 × 10⁻³ eV², E = 1 GeV and L = 295 km the phase is 0.934 rad, its sine squared is 0.647, and with sin²2θ = 1 only 35% of the beam still answers to Lμ.

4Family number fails — but only for a neutrino in flight

Oscillation is a direct violation: a unit of Lμ has become a unit of Lτ or Lₑ, and no charged particle was involved. What it does not touch is the count of neutrinos. U is unitary, so Σβ P(να → νβ) = 1 and a neutrino stays a neutrino; total L = Lₑ + Lμ + Lτ, whose generator is the sum of the three and commutes with a Dirac mass term, is untouched. The failure is also confined. Charged-lepton flavour violation such as μ → eγ must run through a virtual W and a neutrino that changes flavour on the way, so the amplitude is proportional to Σᵢ U*μi Uₑᵢ mᵢ²/MW². Unitarity of U kills any m-independent piece, what survives is of order (Δm²/MW²)² ≈ 10⁻⁴⁹, and the branching ratio lands near 10⁻⁵⁴ — against a measured limit of 1.5 × 10⁻¹³ from MEG II. So in the audit keep each Lα as its own line and treat it as exact for charged leptons; strike it only for a neutrino that has travelled, where the ledger entry stops being an integer and becomes the expectation value ⟨L̂μ⟩ = P(νμ → νμ).

5Total L: exact unless the neutrino is its own antiparticle

Whether total L survives depends on how the mass was written. A Dirac term m ν̄L νR pairs the neutrino with a distinct right-handed partner and is invariant under a common phase, so [H, L̂] = 0 still. A Majorana term ½ m νLᵀ C νL pairs the field with itself, carries charge 2 under that phase, and turns a neutrino into an antineutrino: ΔL = ±2. The experiment that separates them is double beta decay. The two-neutrino mode (A, Z) → (A, Z + 2) + 2e⁻ + 2ν̄ₑ is observed in ¹³⁶Xe with T½ = 2.2 × 10²¹ yr and conserves Lₑ. The neutrinoless mode (A, Z) → (A, Z + 2) + 2e⁻ has ΔLₑ = 2 and needs the antineutrino emitted at one vertex to be absorbed as a neutrino at the other, which only a Majorana particle can do. Its rate is 1/T½ = G(0ν) gA⁴ |M(0ν)|²(mββ/mₑ)² with mββ = |Σ Uₑᵢ² mᵢ|, so a null result is a mass bound: KamLAND-Zen's complete dataset, T½ > 3.8 × 10²⁶ yr, gives mββ below 28–122 meV, the spread coming from the nuclear matrix element. A signal — a line in the summed energy of the two electrons at Q = 2.458 MeV — would settle both questions at once: L is broken, and the neutrino is Majorana.

6Run the audit: exact, accidental, or already broken

Give every particle the vector (Q, B, Lₑ, Lμ, Lτ) and sum each component across the arrow. τ⁻ → μ⁻ + ν̄μ + ντ passes: Lτ 1 → 1, Lμ 0 → 1 − 1. τ⁻ → μ⁻ + γ fails two lines at once, Lτ 1 → 0 and Lμ 0 → 1, while keeping total L at 1. K⁺ → μ⁺ + νμ passes with Lμ 0 → −1 + 1, and it is the neutrino-or-antineutrino sign that separates ν̄ₑ + p → e⁺ + n (allowed) from νₑ + p → e⁺ + n (Lₑ: 1 → −1, forbidden). Then label the status of each line, because knowing which laws are which is the point of the audit. Q is exact and gauged. Each Lα is accidental and already known to fail, but only through neutrino mixing; for charged leptons it holds to better than one part in 10¹². Total L is accidental, unbroken by any observation so far, and tested at ΔL = 2 by 0νββ. A balanced ledger, as always, is necessary and never sufficient: it licenses a reaction without predicting its rate.

Key equations

Read the units, assumptions and limits before substituting.

Family-number operator

L̂α = N̂(α⁻) + N̂(να) − N̂(α⁺) − N̂(ν̄α) · α = e, μ, τ

The ledger entry for one family: sum the eigenvalue over every particle on each side of the arrow and require the two sums to match.

N̂ are number operators, so eigenvalues are integers with no unit. Quarks, hadrons, photons, W, Z and the Higgs carry 0.

Why it is conserved, and why by accident

U(φ) = exp(−iφL̂α) · d⟨L̂α⟩/dt = (i/ℏ)⟨[H, L̂α]⟩ = 0

Every vertex in H either turns a lepton into its own family's neutrino (W) or couples it to itself (γ, Z, Higgs), so H is neutral under the family phase and the commutator vanishes.

φ is a dimensionless phase, H the Standard Model Hamiltonian with massless neutrinos. No gauge field couples to L̂α.

Flavour basis against mass basis (PMNS)

|να⟩ = Σᵢ U*αi |νᵢ⟩ · [H, L̂α] ≠ 0 whenever U is not diagonal

When H and L̂α share no eigenbasis they cannot commute, so L̂α is no longer conserved — the same algebra that forbids Sₓ and Sz from being sharp together.

U is a unitary 3 × 3 matrix. |νᵢ⟩ are H eigenstates with masses mᵢ in eV, |να⟩ are L̂α eigenstates made at a W vertex.

Two-flavour oscillation

P(να → νβ) = sin²2θ · sin²(1.267 Δm² L / E)

P > 0 is family number failing outright — one unit of Lα has become Lβ — while the number of neutrinos, and so total L, is untouched.

Δm² = m₂² − m₁² in eV², L in km, E in GeV. The 1.267 is c⁴/(4ℏc) in those units, from the exact phase Δm²c⁴L/(4ℏcE).

Dirac or Majorana mass term

Dirac: m ν̄L νR (ΔL = 0) · Majorana: ½ m νLᵀ C νL (ΔL = ±2)

Decides whether total L = Lₑ + Lμ + Lτ is conserved at all — the one lepton-number question that oscillation data cannot answer.

m in eV, C the charge-conjugation matrix, νL the left-handed field. Only the Majorana term maps a neutrino to an antineutrino.

Neutrinoless double beta rate

1/T½ = G(0ν) gA⁴ |M(0ν)|² (mββ / mₑ)² · mββ = |Σᵢ Uₑᵢ² mᵢ|

Turns a half-life limit into an effective Majorana mass: T½ > 3.8 × 10²⁶ yr for ¹³⁶Xe puts mββ below roughly 0.1 eV.

G(0ν) in yr⁻¹ (1.46 × 10⁻¹⁴ for ¹³⁶Xe), gA = 1.27 the axial-vector coupling, M(0ν) dimensionless, mββ and mₑ in eV, T½ in yr.

Catch the common trap

Students hear that neutrinos oscillate and conclude that lepton number is not conserved. Oscillation breaks family number — Lμ or Lₑ separately — not the total. The PMNS matrix is unitary, so the probabilities of arriving as νₑ, νμ and ντ sum to one and a neutrino never becomes an antineutrino; the generator of total L is the sum L̂ₑ + L̂μ + L̂τ, and it commutes with a Dirac mass term even when each L̂α does not. Whether total L is conserved is a separate, open question that only a ΔL = 2 process — neutrinoless double β decay — can answer. The same confusion runs the other way: because family number fails, students drop it from the audit. Keep it. For charged leptons it holds to 1.5 × 10⁻¹³, and it is still the line that forbids μ → eγ and puts an antineutrino, not a neutrino, in β⁻ decay.
